기억에 남는 몇 개의 엔딩씬이 있다. 영화를 많이 본 것은 아니기 때문에 꼽아봤자 대개는 이런 저런 영화 잡지에서 한번씩 언급되었을 그런 엔딩들이지만. 일단 가장 좋아하는 것은 이미 한번 이야기한 바 있듯, [파이트 클럽]의 엔딩- 빌딩이 무너지고, 황망하게 서있는 여자에게 에드워드 노튼이 속삭이는 장면 말이다. "우리는 정말 이상한 시대에 만났어". 정확한 해석은 아니지만 (You met me at the very strange time in my life) 대충 이 정도로 퉁치자.그리고Pixies의 Where is My Mind가 울려퍼지고..
The Graduate 의 엔딩씬도 그 못지 않게 기억난다. 한국에서는 "졸업"으로 번역되었지만, 사실은 "졸업생"에 더 가까운 제목. 명문대 졸업생이지만 앞으로의 삶에 대해 미처 결정을 내리지 못한 벤자민 (더스틴 호프만 분)의 갈등을 다루고 있다.
감독인 마이크 니콜스는 마지막 씬을 찍으면서 배우들에게 미소를 짓는 데까지만 주문을 했다고 한다. 더스틴 호프만과 캐서린 로스는 미소를 짓고 나서, 컷 사인이 떨어지기를 기다렸지만 감독은 그 상태에서 계속 카메라를 돌렸고, 일이 어떻게 되고 있는 것인지 몰라 당황스러워하는 그 둘의 표정이 고스란히 담겼다. 일을 저지르고 난 다음의 불안감과 함께하게 된 행복감- 그 감정이 교차하는 (듯한) 미묘한 표정이 둘의 얼굴에 떠오른다.
The Graduate이 빛나는 또 하나의 지점은 Simon & Garfunkel과 함께 한 사운드 트랙이다.
특히 마지막 씬의 배경으로 들려오는 Sound of Silence의 멜로디가 압권.
사실 마이크 니콜스가 영화 속에 넣을 곡이 더 없냐고 물어보았을 때 폴 사이먼은 아직 Mrs Robinson을 채 완성짓지 못한 상태였다. 당황해하며, 폴 사이먼은 말했다. "한 곡이 있긴 한데, 흘러간 것들에 대한 노래에요. 엘레노어 루스벨트와 조 디마지오가 등장하는.." 노래를 들어본 뒤 니콜스는 말했다. "이제 이 노래는 Mrs Roosevelt가 아니라 Mrs. Robinson에 대한 노래가 될 겁니다." 극 중 더스틴 호프만을 유혹하는 (그리고 캐서린 로스의 어머니로 등장하는) 인물이 Mrs. Robinson이었다.
. Mrs Robinson을 연기한 Anne Bancroft가 36이었던 반면 더스틴 호프먼은 당시 29살이었다는 것이 함정... Elaine Robinson을 연기한 캐서린 로스는 27 살이었군요.
첨언 한가지 더 하자면,
더스틴 호프만이 결혼식 장으로 뛰어가서 결혼 깽판치고 신부와 달려가는 장면은 정말 무수히 많이 패러디 되었는데,
아, 그리고 신화-너의 결혼식을 빼놓을 수 없을 것 같다. "영화 [졸업] 같은 일이 생길까/ 나에겐 그런 용기가 없어"

2000년대 힙합-알앤비로는 믹스를 몇개 만들 수도 있다. 가장 자연스럽게 손이 가는 음악들. 특히 Fabolous의 사랑 노래들은 요즘처럼 괜시리 뭘 들어야할지 모르겠을 때, 새로운 음악을 들으려다가도 괜시리 귀찮아질 때 유독 좋다.
그리고 이런 스타일의 정점에 있는 'Trade It All' 시리즈.

the type I be beepin the horn, rollin down the windows for"
원체 오랫동안 인기를 누려온 탓에 R.Kelly의 유산을 콕 집어 말하기란 쉽지 않다. 그가 처음 시작했던 것들은 어느 덧 당연하게 여겨지거나, 유행이 되거나, 혹은 온갖 추문과 송사에 휘말리는 동안 셀레브리티의 괴벽으로 전락해버렸다. 유독 적나라하고 과감했던 그의 가사나, Trapped In the Closet을 발표하면서 스스로 웃음거리로 만들어버린 '알앤비 오페라'에 대한 욕망이 그 마지막 예에 속할 것이다. 사실 알켈리만큼 꾸준하게 줄거리가 담긴 노래를 만드려 애쓴 사람도 잘 없을텐데.
그러니만치 R.Kelly를 음악적으로 이야기하는 일은 의외로 어렵다. 디스코그라피조차 [I Believe I can Fly]부터 [I'm a Flirt]를 넘나드는 그인만큼, 대개는 유명한 곡을 몇개 논하는 데에서 그칠 뿐이다. 적어도 듣다보면 그의 재능이 얼마나 넓고 깊은 것이었는지에 대해서는 어렴풋이나마 알게 될테니까. 내게는 이 곡이 그런 종류다. 아직도 종종 라디오에서 나오는 것을 들을 때마다 감탄하지 않을 수가 없다. 특히나 "원곡"과 비교해보면 더욱.
'Love'의 그 으아이으아이아이아 는 정말 어떻게 낼 수 있는 소리인가 궁금했지. 아마 Keyshia Cole도 우연히 터득한 게 아닐까. 연습실에서, 혹은 자신의 방에서 소리를 내보다가. 으아이아으아이아. 아무튼 Keyshia Cole의 첫 앨범은 정말 모든 곡이 좋았다. 이후 앨범들은 별로였나 하면 그건 또 아니지만, 이후에는 좀더 '힙합 소울'의 색이 짙어졌달까. 힙합에 볼드체가 들어간 힙합 소울 말이다. 그것도 나름 시사하는 바가 있었지만 (게다가 그린 랜턴과의 믹스테입으로 데뷔했다는 걸 생각해보자- 그녀는 애초에 베이스가 힙합이었다), 나는 느릿 느릿한 템포 위에서 소리 하나 하나에 결을 살려 부르던 그 모습이 더 좋았는데. 과장이라고? R-a-i-n-y d-a-y-s를 끊어서 부를 때 꼭 그런 느낌이 들지 않는가. 으아이아이아으아이아
B2K노래 중에 내가 좋아하는 것들은 대개 느린 템포의 알앤비 곡들인데 이건 정말 거부할 수 없다. 알 켈리의 프로듀싱. 론 아이즐리와 윌 스미스가 등장하는 뮤직비디오도 나름 깨알 같은 재미. 론 아이즐리는 당시 알 켈리와 함께 알앤비 막장 드라마를 쓰면서 재미를 보았는데 이 노래의 뮤직비디오에서도 그 막장 드라마 속 캐릭터인 Mr. Big 으로 등장했다.
뭐 아무튼 간에 정말 B2K 곡 중에서는 물론이고 알 켈리가 작업한 수많은 노래 중에서도 가장 사랑하는 곡. 심지어 Lil Fizz의 랩도 제법 괜찮은 것 같아....!
아닌 게 아니라 노래 제목이 "노래 만들어 줘" 라니. 게다가 스튜디오에서의 작업 과정을 묘사한 가사도 피상적이고, 이따금씩 팀발랜드 찬양조로 빠지기까지 하는 지라 이걸 정말 팔아먹으려고 내놓은 건지, 테스트 용으로 내놓은 건지가 궁금할 지경. 결국 이 노래는 어떻게 싱글로 나왔건만 앨범은 엎어져서 부틀렉으로 돌아다니고 있다. 카일리 딘은 이 외에도 앨범을 하나 더 녹음하지만 마찬가지 운명을 맞고 말았다. 앞에서 '레이블에 사인되었지만 앨범 한 장 못내본 음악인' 에 대해 잠깐 언급했는데 그녀는 내가 생각하는 가장 대표적인 사례.
비트들이 이 시기의 팀발랜드 음악치고는 죄다 심심한데, 얼마 전 저스틴 팀버레이크의 새 앨범이 나왔을 때 떠올랐던 앨범이 이것이었다..... 그냥 무난 무난한 팀발랜드 비트들의 모음들, 하면 이 앨범이 생각난다.
한국에도 아마 '원조 빅뱅' 정도로 잘 알려져 있을 B2K와 연계되어서 데뷔했다. Lil Fizz의 사촌으로 스스로를 소개하곤 했는데 실제로는 어릴 때부터 굉장히 친한 사이일 뿐 혈연 관계는 없다고.
1년에도 얼마나 많은 음악인들이 레이블과 계약을 맺고, 앨범 한 장 못 내본 채 사라지는지. Jhene Aiko도 그렇게 될 뻔 했으나 (아래에서 언급되는 '11월 즈음 나올 앨범'은 결국 발매되지 않았고, 그녀 역시 레이블을 떠났다.) 전혀 다른 모습으로 오늘 날 다시 무대 위에 섰다.

미친 듯이 좋다. 이 앨범 전체가 정말 듣기 좋음. 훌륭한 음악과 듣기 좋은 음악이 늘 같지는 않겠지만 후자를 만족시키는 음악이라면 항상 훌륭하지 않을까. "하늘 위에 떠있는 눈" 이라는 괴상한 소재와 그에 못지 않게 괴상한 앨범 커버 (호루스의 눈이 그려져있다) 때문에 드립 치기에도 종종 유용한 앨범.

"Won't you ease my worried mind?" 라니. 협박조에 가깝게 느껴지는- 한동안 에릭 클랩턴을 별로 좋아하지 않아서 이 노래도 괜시리 한 층 더 삐딱하게 받아들였는지 모르겠다- 가사지만 그래도 절절하다. 사실 처음 들었을 때는 그 유명하다던 인트로도, 노래도 심드렁하게 느껴졌는데, 어느 날 우연히 끝까지 들었다가 건반소리와 함께 등장하는 소리의 풍경에 마음을 빼앗겼던 기억. 나도 모르게 노래를 듣다가 끝날 성 싶으면 넘기는 습관이 들어있었던 모양이다. 그러한 우연이 없었더라면 에릭 클랩턴은, 그리고 이 노래는 내게 여전히 '좋다고는 하는데 여전히 뭐가 좋은지 모르겠는' 존재로 남아있었을 공산이 크다. 그의 다른 작품에 관심을 가지게 된 것도 Layla의 경험을 통해서였으니까.
Layla를 제외하고도, 이 앨범에는 아름답고 깊숙한 락큰롤/ 블루스들이 그득 그득 차있다. 밴 모리슨을 연상시키기도 한다. (저 시절 락큰롤을 하던 이들-특히 백인 음악인들-에게 밴 모리슨은 부정할 수 없는 영향력이었을테니 말이다.) 제목은 Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. Layla와 "다른 사랑 노래들". 결국 이 앨범을 꿰뚫는 주제는 사랑이다.
그래서- 패티 보이드에게 바쳐진 노래는 비단 Layla 뿐이 아니었을지도 모른다고 생각한다. 물론, 이 앨범이 에릭 클랩턴의 솔로가 아닌, 엄연한 "데릭 앤 더 도미노스"라는 밴드의 작품으로 탄생했음을 - 그래서 이 앨범을 에릭 클랩턴의 삶에 빗대어 생각하는 것 또한 심각한 오독의 여지를 남긴다는 사실도 잊어서는 안되겠다.

마이클 볼튼의 유명한 버전과는 분위기가 사뭇 다른 원곡. 마이클 볼튼이 깔끔하고 시원스러운 보컬로 훌륭하게 연기한다면 퍼시 슬레지는 쥐어짜내는 듯한 절절함이 매력. 특히 "baby please don't treat me bad" 라 할 때는 원체 음을 힘겹게 때리다보니 거의 호소처럼 들린다.

[Teenager of the Year] (1994) 앨범에서. 프랭크 블랙의 통통하고 creepy하게 어린 얼굴이 앨범 제목에 잘 어울린다 싶었는데 (in an ironic way) 실제로도 청소년 시절 Teenager of the Year상을 탄 적이 있었다고.
